San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle was carted off the field after suffering an injury during the game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. The injury happened after Kittle caught a pass late in the first half.

After Kittle was carted off, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported that 49ers owner Jed York and Kittle’s wife, Claire, walked into the team locker room, and both appeared “visibly somber.” The 49ers then announced that Kittle has been ruled out with an Achilles injury.

This likely means that Kittle will be out for the rest of the postseason and potentially the start of the 2026 season if it’s an Achilles tear. The 32-year-old is no stranger to injuries this season, as he was placed on injured reserve in September with a hamstring injury. Kittle played in 11 regular-season games and caught 57 passes for 628 yards and seven touchdowns. His production led to the NFL naming him to the Pro Bowl for the seventh time in his career.

A look at George Kittle’s career

In April of last year, Kittle signed a contract extension with the 49ers through the 2029 season. “In 2017, our first year with the 49ers, we selected a skinny tight end from Iowa whom we were really excited about,” GM John Lynch said in a statement at the time, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN. “We had high hopes, but no one knew that he would become the player that he is today. He has a great sense of pride in his role and has put in the work to be one of the best tight ends in the NFL.”

The 49ers selected Kittle in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He had a breakout season in 2018, catching 88 passes for 1,377 yards and five touchdowns. In 124 regular-season games, Kittle has registered 595 receptions, 8,008 yards, and 52 TDs.

During his time with the 49ers, Kittle has reached the Super Bowl twice (2019 and 2023). In both Super Bowl appearances, Kittle and the 49ers fell to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
