Carolina Panthers veteran RB Rashaad Penny retiring from NFL
Carolina Panthers running back Rashaad Penny informed the team Tuesday he is retiring after six seasons in the NFL.
Penny, 28, was gearing up for season No. 7, but is instead calling it a career. Carolina has officially placed him on the reserve/retired list. The Panthers signed Penny in May, reuniting him with Dave Canales, who served as an assistant on the Seattle Seahawks coaching staff while he was there from 2018-22.
Penny, selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of San Diego State, showcased his talent in those five seasons with Seattle, though injuries prevented him from doing more. He suited up in 42 games (11 starts), tallying 1,918 yards on 5.7 yards per carry and 13 touchdowns. He suffered a season-ending broken fibula in Week 5 of the 2022 regular season and went into the 2023 offseason as a free agent.

Penny then signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, but rarely saw any in-game action. He appeared in just three games, rushing for 33 yards on 11 carries.
Penny said just last week he feels he’s a top running back in the league when healthy.
“I’ve always believed in myself, knowing my capabilities,” Penny told Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer. “I think everybody else knows that when I’m healthy, I’m probably, like, a top running back in the league. I know my place. I know what I can do. So, I just keep striving from there.”
