Brian Schottenheimer gives definitive answer on idea of Cowboys sitting Dak Prescott for Joe Milton
The Dallas Cowboys and their 2025 playoff hopes were effectively ended this past Sunday night by the Minnesota Vikings. Dallas has less than a 1% chance of making the postseason; is it time for head coach Brian Schottenheimer to begin sitting starters out to avoid injury? When it comes to quarterback Dak Prescott, that’s not under consideration.
Schottenheimer was asked Wednesday about the idea of sitting Prescott and playing backup quarterback Joe Milton at some point in the final three games of the season. Schottenheimer wants to win. When it comes down to that, the decision is simple.
“I want to win, so the plan would be to play Dak,” Schottenheimer said, via Tommy Yarrish of DallasCowboys.com.
The Cowboys have the No. 1 ranked offense in the NFL. Prescott, in his 10th season in Dallas, is a big reason for that. Through 14 games, Prescott has thrown for 3,931 yards, 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions on 68.4% passing. Prescott is second among passers with a 72.8 QBR.
Milton, the second-year pro out of Michigan, was acquired this past offseason from the New England Patriots. He’s seen action in two games this season, completing 6-of-9 passes for 99 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Cowboys to stick with Dak Prescott, Joe Milton will stay on bench
Milton has some promising traits, however, this is Prescott’s team. This season hasn’t gone to plan for the Cowboys, but they won’t stop battling until the very end.
“You’re a professional football player,” Prescott said of the team’s approach the next three weeks. “You have to come to work and give your absolute best, regardless. Unfortunately, I’m sure the playoffs are out of the picture, but it’s about taking pride in who you are as a man, and not only that and your job and everything that’s gotten you to this point. I know for a lot of guys, it’s just the business of the world, right?
“That’s interviews for some people. You can’t just give up. You can’t just stop. You can’t just say, ‘Oh, we’re not going to the playoffs.’ It’s the National Football League. I just saw a team Thursday night that’s not going to the playoffs beat a good team and knock them out. We’ve got to show up and just do our job, and that starts throughout the week.”
