Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix is expected to be sidelined for 12 weeks after undergoing successful surgery to repair his broken ankle, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. He suffered the injury against the Buffalo Bills in the Divisional Round last weekend.

According to Schefter, Nix is not supposed to put any pressure on his ankle to four weeks, but the recovery time will take a couple of extra months. That means if the Broncos beat the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game on Sunday, there’s no chance Nix will make a miraculous recovery before then.

Nix broke his ankle against the Bills in overtime, but was able to finish the game seemingly uninjured. He even led Denver to the game-winning drive that resulted in a Will Lutz field goal.

Head coach Sean Payton called a press conference after his initial media availability to reveal the news. In his place, Jarrett Stidham will start for the Broncos on Sunday.

Nix’s surgery was performed on Tuesday by Dr. Norman Waldrop, who is an orthopedic surgeon based out of Birmingham. He’s the same doctor who operated on Joe Burrow’s turf toe injury earlier this season.

Despite the injury, Nix finished the game completing 26-46 passing attempts for 279 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. He also led the Broncos in rushing with 29 yards on 12 carries. With the win, he joined Tim Tebow as the only other Denver-drafted quarterback to lead the franchise to a Playoff victory.

Nix took to social media a few days after his injury to reflect on his season-ending injury. He also took a moment to rally behind Stidham, who has been affectionately nicknamed ‘Stiddy’ by head coach Sean Payton.

“The last few days have been hard to put into words,” Nix wrote on Instagram. “What started as one of the most exciting games I’ve ever been a part of ended with some of the most devastating football news I’ve ever received. This is not how I imagined my season would come to an end, but our season has been defined by overcoming adversity and responding to it.

“I can’t express how much this team and organization mean to me and how much I believe in them. I couldn’t be more proud of our guys. I couldn’t be more confident in Jarrett (Stidham). And I couldn’t be more excited for what’s next.”
