Ben Roethlisberger teases Steelers comeback after DK Metcalf trade

The Pittsburgh Steelers fired up their fanbase on Sunday, acquiring wide receiver D.K. Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks via trade. Ben Roethlisberger is even thinking about making a comeback after hearing the news.

Check out the video Roethlisberger shared to social media below. While it’s far fetched, we can’t blame the two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback from weighing his options after considering how the Steelers offense could operate in 2025.

“Coach T [Mike Tomlin], are you kidding me? DK Metcalf on one side. GP [George Pickens] on the other. Muth [Pat Freiermuth] working the middle. I might need to throw my hat in the ring,” Roethlisberger joked, via Footbahlin with Ben. “If you’re looking for a guy, I might still have a couple throws left in me.”

While a comeback for Roethlisberger may be a little far fetched, he certainly recognizes what Metcalf will bring to the Steelers. Over six seasons in Seattle, the two-time Pro Bowler and one-time Second Team All-Pro wide receiver caught 438 passes for 6,324 yards and 48 touchdowns. That averages out to 73 receptions a season for 1,054 yards and eight touchdowns.

Additionally, Metcalf was the team’s leading receiver in three of those years and was second in the other three in sharing a corps with Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. However, in career-low appearances this fall, Metcalf had his worst season since his first in the league with 66 catches for 992 yards and five scores.

Next season was going to be the final year of Metcalf’s last deal with Seattle with at a salary of $18 million. Now, with an extension that he’s received from the Steelers, he’ll get a raise up to around $30 million per year, becoming one of the top-paid receivers in the NFL.

George Pickens should benefit from the move, as well. The two wide receivers had comparable production of late. Metcalf tallied 66 catches for 992 yards and five touchdowns playing for the Seahawks in 2024. Meanwhile, with for the Steelers, Pickens had 59 catches for 900 yards and three touchdowns.

All told, the trade was the shot in the arm the Steelers needed, and D.K. Metcalf could excel in Pittsburgh. It remains to be seen who their quarterback is, and while it may not be Ben Roethlisberger, it’s certainly fun to dream about the possibility.
