Antonio Gibson injury update: Patriots RB seen tearing up after leaving medical tent, ruled out by team
New England Patriots running back Antonio Gibson suffered a brutal knee injury during the Sunday Night Football game against the Buffalo Bills. As he was helped off the field, Gibson was seen tearing up after leaving the medical tent.
The Patriots then announced that Gibson has been ruled out due to the knee injury. He finished his night with 21 yards on six carries.
While we’ll find out more details about Antonio Gibson’s injury later in the week, football writer and doctory of physical therapy Jeff Mueller said that the former Memphis star may have done damage to his right ACL/MCL. He also said that Gibson’s “meniscus could also be implicated.”
Through four games this year, Gibson has recorded 85 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries. He is in his second season with the Patriots and finished the 2024 season with 538 rushing yards, 206 receiving yards, and one rushing touchdown.

Earlier this season, Gibson was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week after recording a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the Patriots’ Week 2 matchup against the Miami Dolphins. It was the first kickoff return TD he scored in his NFL career.
More on Antonio Gibson’s NFL career
“I was right there, actually. I was right there watching him,” Patriots quarterback Drake Maye said about Gibson’s TD after the Week 2 matchup, per the Patriots’ official website. “I saw him kind of cut it around the edge, and the kicker didn’t know where he was at. He just kept turning, and I knew he wasn’t catching it then. What a play. Like I said, they made a play on special teams, we make a play. That’s this league. It’s close games, and you’ve got to come out in one-score games. You’ve got to come out on top. That was awesome.”
The Washington Commanders selected Gibson in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft. His best season in Washington was in 2021, when he rushed for 1,037 yards and seven touchdowns. He also caught 42 passes for 294 yards and three scores during the 2021 season.
