Five schools to watch for UTSA running back transfer Rocko Griffin

UTSA running back Rocko Griffin entered the transfer portal earlier this week. He’s been in contact with Tulane, Georgia State, Florida Atlantic, Arizona and Duke in the last few days, On3 has learned.

The running back previously played for Vanderbilt. In four games this season, Griffin ran 17 times for 44 yards. In 12 games for UTSA in 2023, he had 91 carries for 483 yards, six touchdowns and 5.3 yards per carry. He’s missed the Roadrunners’ last two games.

A fifth-year back, Griffin has 299 career carries for 1,222 yards, 11 touchdowns and averaging 4.1 yards per carry. He also has 23 career catches for 90 yards. During the 2023 season with UTSA, the running back went for 43 yards and a touchdown on 11 rushes in the 35-17 victory over Marshall in the Frisco Bowl, the program’s first-ever bowl win.

As a member of the Class of 2020, Griffin was a three-star recruit out of Savannah (Ga.) South Effingham, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 108 overall prospect in the state, the No. 89 running back in the class and the No. 1,031 overall prospect in the class.

Because he is a grad transfer, Griffin was able to enter the portal before it officially opens Monday, Dec. 9, 2024.

More than 2,800 FBS scholarship players entered their names into the NCAA’s transfer database during the 2023-24 school year. Removing those who withdrew or went pro, the final total sat at 2,707 transfers. That means roughly 25% of all FBS scholarship players hit free agency in one year.
