UNC Greensboro working to hire ex-Stanford coach Jerod Haase for coaching job
The UNC Greensboro Spartans are closing in on their next men’s basketball head coach. According to Pete Nakos of On3, they’re working to hire former Stanford Cardinal men’s basketball head coach Jerod Haase.
While a deal is not yet finalized, both sides are progressing through the process to make Haase the program’s next leader. Haase brings extensive experience at both the high-major and mid-major levels.
He most recently spent eight seasons at Stanford, compiling a 126–127 record. He failed to reach the NCAA Tournament during his tenure, which ultimately led to his dismissal in March 2024.
“I don’t know exactly what I’m going to do, but I’m going to chase awesome,” Haase said when his time at Stanford came to an end, via The Kansas City Star. He promised that he has “a next chapter and hopefully many chapters in my book. Hopefully I can be around people like I’ve been around the last eight years.”
It looks like UNC Greensboro is the next chapter for the longtime coach. Prior to Stanford, Haase found notable success at UAB. In just his third season, he led the Blazers to the NCAA Tournament, where they pulled off a memorable upset as a No. 14 seed over No. 3 seed Iowa State in 2015.

Moreover, Haase’s coaching roots run deep. He spent 13 years as an assistant under Hall of Fame coach Roy Williams at both Kansas and North Carolina, helping build elite programs before transitioning into a head coaching role.
As a player, Haase starred at Kansas after transferring from California, earning national recognition as a Naismith and Wooden Award candidate. Known for his durability and defensive presence, he missed just two games during his collegiate career while scoring over 1,200 points.
Now, UNC Greensboro appears poised to bring in a coach with a proven track record of program building and player development. The Spartans are looking to remain competitive in the Southern Conference, and Haase’s blend of high-level experience and mid-major success could make him a strong fit.
If finalized, the hire would mark a new chapter for UNC Greensboro as it aims to contend for conference titles and return to the NCAA Tournament. Bringing in a coach of Haase’s seems like an easy decision.
