Sean Miller takes subtle jab at Kentucky fans when discussing Matas Vokietaitis' play
After opening SEC play with an 0-2 record, Kentucky rattled off its fourth consecutive conference victory Wednesday night in Lexington. Although the game was tied at halftime, the Wildcats outscored Texas 45-40 in the second half to cement the 85-80 victory.
Following the loss, Texas head coach Sean Miller took a subtle jab at Kentucky fans and their issues with the fouls called on Longhorn center Matas Vokietaitis. Vokietaitis hit 5/6 free throws in the loss, but was just 5/14 from the field.
“Matas, on our end, I know the fans here love to boo every time a foul is called,” Miller said. “He gets fouled as much as any player in the country, and he does a good job. He was 5/14 tonight and back to your point on Malachi (Moreno), I think Malachi influenced some of those misses, although he shot just six free throws. He usually shoots more. I credit Kentucky‘s defense.”
Texas entered the game as one of the most fouled teams in the country and drew 19 fouls Wednesday night. Kentucky, however, beat the Longhorns at their own game and drew 23 fouls. This resulted in 15 more free throws for the ‘Cats, which was vital in their first victory over Texas since 2014.
Sean Miller was furious with Texas’ fouling tendencies following loss
It appeared as if the Longhorns had turned the corner following an 0-2 start to conference play, as it strung together back-to-back ranked victories over No. 13 Alabama (92-88) and No. 10 Vanderbilt (80-64). Sean Miller‘s program, however, has now dropped back-to-back games against Texas A&M (74-70) and Kentucky, dropping their record to 11-8. They currently sit in the ‘First Four Out’ category in On3’s latest Bracketology.

“What our team has, and this is a Texas problem, is we have a virus called fouling,” Miller continued. “It has plagued us from the opening top of the season to tonight. It’s not the officials. It’s not Kentucky. We will foul the living s**t out of you.
“We will foul a three-point shooter. We’ll foul at the end of the clock. We’ll leave our feet on drives and we’ll reach. You describe the foul, and the team that I’m coaching will commit it. Tonight, we lost. Kentucky was 30/35 from the line. It’s hard to win an SEC road game when the home team is 30/35 from the line.”
