Rutgers has hired LSU assistant coach Gary Redus as their next women’s basketball head coach, sources told On3. Redus is represented by Carl Reed of Klutch Sports.

Redus has spent the last four seasons working with the Tigers under Hall of Famer Kim Mulkey. He’s widely known as one of the top recruiters in the women’s basketball game, bringing in several top classes since his arrival in Baton Rouge.

He has also assisted in the development of several guards in his time at LSU.

This will mark Redus’ first head coaching gig, but he also spent time at both Vanderbilt and SMU as an assistant coach.

Rutgers president William Tate also came from LSU, so there’s a level of familiarity.

The Scarlet Knights went 9-20 last season, with a 1-17 mark in Big Ten play. They didn’t qualify for the Big Ten tournament. Former head coach Coquese Washington had been at the helm since 2022 and the program hadn’t reached an NCAA Tournament or had a season above .500 in that time.

Redus II will be the fourth head coach in program history, and the first male to hold the job. Washington, C. Vivian Stringer, and Theresa Grentz were the previous three in a long and storied program.

Notably, five days from the hiring’s official announcement, the transfer portal will open to current players.

Redus’ Previous experience

  • 2016-17: West Georgia (Graduate Assistant)
  • 2017-19: Delta State (Assistant Coach)
  • 2019-21: Vanderbilt (Assistant Coach / Recruiting Coordinator)
  • 2021-22: SMU (Assistant Coach)
  • 2022-26: LSU (Assistant Coach)
