Virginia is hiring former Syracuse head coach Adrian ‘Red’ Autry as an assistant coach. The program announced the hire Thursday morning.

Autry and Syracuse parted ways following this season, which marked his third at his alma mater. Across three seasons, Autry led the Orange to a disappointing 49-48 (24-34) record with no NCAA Tournament appearances.

With the move, the duo of Autry and Virginia head coach Ryan Odom reunites. They previously worked together at Virginia Tech (2010-11) under head coach Seth Greenberg.

Virginia is coming off an extremely successful season under first-year head coach Ryan Odom. Odom, who was poached from VCU, led the Cavaliers to a 30-6 (15-3) record and a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. They knocked off No. 14 seed Wright State in the First Round to earn their first win in the Big Dance since winning the National Championship in 2019.

“We are thrilled to add Adrian Autry to our coaching staff at Virginia,” Odom said, via press release. “His integrity, extensive experience, commitment to player development and knowledge of the game make him an invaluable addition to our program. I am confident he will help us continue our pursuit of excellence at Virginia. We look forward to welcoming Adrian, his wife, Andrea, and their family to Charlottesville.”

Adrian Autry has not coached anywhere other than Syracuse since 2010-11 season

The move to Charlottesville marks a massive change of scenery for Autry, who had been a member of Syracuse‘s staff in some capacity since the 2011-12 season.

“I’m excited and grateful for the opportunity to join Coach Odom and the Virginia men’s basketball program,” Autry said, via press release. “This is a new chapter for me, and I am ready to get to work.”

Autry was originally promoted to head coach at Syracuse following Jim Boeheim‘s retirement following the 2022-23 season. While many were excited for the future of the program under Autry’s guidance, things just did not work out. The Orange did, however, open the 2025-26 season with a 12-5 record and looked like a potential Dark Horse to make a run for the NCAA Tournament.

From that point on, though, Syracuse lost 12 of its final 15 games and failed to qualify for the Big Dance for the fifth consecutive season. While the Orange decided to move on with Siena head coach (and also an alum) Gerry McNamara leading the way, Autry will now return as an assistant coach for the first time in four seasons.
