Penn State junior guard Freddie Dilione V plans to enter the Transfer Portal. On3’s Joe Tipton confirmed the news. He is seeking his third program in four seasons.

Across two seasons at Penn State, Dilione V averaged 11.7 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in 63 games (43 starts). His career began at Tennessee, where he averaged just 1.7 points, 0.8 assists, and 0.6 rebounds in 18 games. Dilione V’s best game at Penn State came in a 93-85 loss to No. 5 Purdue on Jan. 10, in which he scored a career-high (tied) 25 points on 10-20 shooting.

Dilione V is the first Penn State player to announce his intentions to enter the Portal.

Penn State head coach Mike Rhoades discussed disappointing season

The Nittany Lions are coming off a dreadful 12-20 (3-17) campaign in their third season under head coach Mike Rhoades. They opened Big Ten play losers of their first 10 conference games, and lost in the First Round of the Big Ten Tournament 76-66 to Northwestern. Across Dilione V’s two seasons in Happy Valley, Penn State compiled a 28-35 record and did not come close to reaching the NCAA Tournament.

“It was a really hard year for me. It was really hard,” Rhoades said following their Big Ten Tournament loss. “The world we live in now, you want to give yourself a chance. You want to give your team a chance to be successful. So it’s hard. The reality is when you’re really young in Power Four basketball, you’re at a disadvantage. So we need to address that, and we need to get our young guys bigger, better, and badder and stronger.

“That’s it. You’ve got to be old. You’ve got to be old because everybody else is. The best teams in our league and the best teams in the country are old and experienced. We’ve got to address some of that.

“I always reevaluate everything I do and what we do in the program, and I’ll do that again. I know that works. It’s been a tough stretch. This is a hard job, but it’s pretty awesome too, the Big Ten and trying to figure it out at the place where I am.”

It’s safe to say year four for Mike Rhoades at Penn State will be make or break. The Nittany Lions have made the NCAA Tournament just once since 2011. Dilione V, however, will not be sticking around for a potential return to the Big Dance.
