Memphis men's basketball stuck in Wichita until Monday due to winter storm after loss to vs. Wichita State
The Memphis men’s basketball team will have an extended stay in Wichita following its 74-59 loss against Wichita State on Saturday. According to Jason Munz of the Memphis Commercial-Appeal, the Tigers will not be able to travel back to Memphis until Monday due to a winter storm that is affecting many states across the country.
According to CNN, the storm is expected to impact more than 2,000 miles across the U.S. from Texas all the way to New England through Sunday. Wichita is in that path with temperatures expected to dip below zero in the early morning hours and heavy snowfall expected.
All that will keep the Memphis basketball team from getting on a plane to go back home for at least the next day. They’ll look to stay huddled up and warm inside as they wait for the storm to pass.
Saturday’s loss to the Shockers was the second in a row for Memphis as well as its third in the past five games. The Tigers fell below .500 to 9-10 (4-3 AAC) on the season.
Things were off from the start for Memphis as Wichita State jumped out to a 40-22 lead by halftime. The Tigers never could get the deficit back under double digits after that as they trailed by as many as 24 on their way to the lopsided loss.
Memphis shot just 16% from 3-point range and also committed 17 turnovers. Curtis Givens III finished as the leading scorer despite managing just 11 points.

Next up for Memphis is a matchup against Florida Atlantic on Thursday at home, so they’ll get back with plenty of time to prepare for that contest. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. ET on Thursday as the Tigers look to snap this losing streak.
Tennessee men’s basketball also has travel plans delayed amid winter storm
Memphis was not the only team in college basketball to have its travel plans delayed by the winter storm. Tennessee also will not travel back to Knoxville after it played Alabama on Saturday evening.
Volequest reported that the Volunteers plan to travel back Sunday if the weather permits. They have a game against Georgia in Athens on Tuesday, so that will be a situation worth monitoring.
It’s clear that the winter storm will impact many teams across the country as they look to get back home this weekend. We’ll hope for safe travels for all as they navigate these frigid temperatures and icy conditions.
