Michigan vs. Wisconsin

Michigan entered Saturday as the No. 2 overall seed in bracketology, behind only Duke for the top spot in the field. Wisconsin came into the day as a rising team, making the move from the 6-seed line to the 5-seed line during a Big Ten Tournament run which featured more resume-building wins.

A win for Michigan had two stakes, with the right to challenge Duke for the No. 1 overall seed the most important. It was also an opportunity to lock up the right to stick where they are, relative to Arizona, regardless of the Big 12 Championship. For Wisconsin, cementing their spot on the 5-seed line was the biggest incentive outside of a spot in the championship game on Sunday.

Michigan held on down the stretch, pulling out a last-second victory which helps solidify their spot in the field with hope remaining for a jump. They will learn whether a bracketology move is on the table tomorrow when Duke faces Virginia tonight.

Wisconsin played this game much closer than predicted, which will benefit them on the seed-line. Given they made a deeper run than the rest of the contenders on the 5-seed and 6-seed lines, they will hold onto the spot in these projections on tight margins.

Florida vs. Vanderbilt

Florida entered the day hoping to secure its 1-seed position and advance to the SEC Championship on Sunday. Vanderbilt, which rose onto the 4-seed line, wanted to keep its run going and shake things up.

With a win, Florida would have likely created enough space from UConn and Houston to feel comfortable on the 1-seed line. However, a loss puts that at risk based on the Huskies Big East Championship result and the Cougars attempt to upset Arizona.

Vanderbilt made a big statement with a blowout win, which held steady for much of the game. The Commodores will now vault into the mix of teams in range of a 3-seed jump, although the ability to move multiple positions in scrubbing, as these teams were previously seeded, could prove the biggest challenge.

Florida is still in the mix for the 1-seed position, and likely favored to keep it. UConn would need a convincing performance to flip things, and Arizona remains the favorite over Houston in the Big 12 Championship.

UConn vs. St. John’s

Entering the day, UConn sat on the 2-seed line as the first team in the mix for a just onto the 1-seed line. A Florida loss left the door open, but did not make a move certain as the Huskies still needed a strong performance and enough to hold off Houston. For St. John’s, they sat on the 4-seed line, but in the final spot.

The chance to move onto the 1-seed line provided plenty motivation for UConn, on top of clinching a Big East title. St. John’s also had plenty to play for, increasing the chance of preferable seeding if they could sweep the Big East championships.

St. John’s came out on top, leaving no doubt in the championship game. The performance should increase momentum toward a 4-seed spot on Selection Sunday. However, that spot is not guaranteed as Kansas still holds a strong resume and Arkansas gets one more chance to put a win on its resume, along with lifting the SEC Championship.

For UConn, the loss cements a spot on the 2-seed line. They will wait to learn which region they travel to on Sunday, with a chance Houston jumps them on the overall seed-line based on the weekend’s results.

Bubble movement

The NCAA Tournament bubble continues to shrink in the final days, as more teams can consider themselves safely in the mix. However, there are two or three spots left in flux due to potential bid-stealers across college basketball.

  • VCU secures a win in the A-10 semifinals to create more separation from the bubble cutline. With the St. Louis upset loss, they are now the favorites to claim the automatic bid and push Miami (OH) down into the Last Four In.
  • SDSU reaches the MWC Final, but still sits on the wrong side of the bubble. They failed to secure the automatic bid and will likely land on the wrong side of the cutline this season.
  • Missouri, SMU and Texas all remain on the right side of the bubble entering the day, but will watch for bid-stealers across college basketball. Oklahoma and SDSU fell short of reaching the field as at-large candidates, but opportunities to lose position still exist.
  • Auburn returns to the top position in the First Four Out category. They still hold an analytic case to land inside the field when compared to fellow SEC schools Missouri and Texas, but a weaker overall record and less Q1 wins and top-half quadrant wins.

Bracket notes

Keep up to date to date with which teams have locked themselves into the field, which regional locations they are likely to land in, plus more over the final week of action. From the top of the bracket to the bottom, there is plenty news unfolding each day.

  • The deep SEC Tournament run by Ole Miss left bubble teams in fear of a surprise bid-stealer, but there will not be a team breaking up the field from the traditional high-major conferences this season.
  • The A-10 semifinals have provided a bid-stealing opportunity. With St. Louis in the field as an at-large already, the winner of the conference tournament will shake up the bubble.
  • The Mountain West is the other conference which could provide a bid-stealer, as Utah State enters the day firmly in the field against wrong-side-of-the-bubble SDSU.
