Boopie Miller hits half-court buzzer-beater to secure comeback victory over Virginia Tech
A crazy night in college basketball got even crazier when SMU defeated Virginia Tech 77-76 after a 48-foot half-court heave from Boopie Miller at the buzzer for the win. The shot was made possible after Virginia Tech missed a free throw with four seconds left in regulation.
SMU was able to call timeout after securing the rebound off the miss. After a prolonged stoppage for officials to set the clock, Miller was given the inbound pass and called game. The shot went into the net and on cue, pyro erupted as the Mustangs dog-piled on Miller to celebrate the win.
Miller finished the matchup scoring 24 points in 35 minutes on the court. He did a bit of everything as well, logging six assists, four rebounds and two stealers. Miller was also 0-5 from the beyond the arc before making the miracle shot while SMU went 3-15 (20%) from deep during the contest.
Heading into the contest, though, his status wasn’t clear. He was made probable with an illness after missing SMU’s last game, but of course, was ultimately cleared to compete. He’d go on to lead all scorers during the contest.
On the season, Miller came into the matchup averaging 20.6 points (on a 48.1% field goal percentage) and 7.1 assists per game for the Mustangs. Wednesday’s performance was the third-straight game that Miller has scored at least 23 points. In addition, Miller has also scored at least 20 points in nine of his 16 appearances for SMU this season.

Miller was aided by double-digit scoring efforts from three of his teammates. 7-footer Samet Tigitoglu scored 14 points with three rebounds while Jaron Pierre Jr. went for 13 points and nine boards. Freshman Jaden Tooms logged the first double-double of his career with 12 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. This comes after Tooms logged a career-high 23 points in a loss to Duke on the road.
The win improves SMU to 13-4 on the season, including a 2-2 start to ACC play. The Mustangs upset North Carolina at home to open conference action but went on to lose consecutive matchups on the road at Clemson and Duke. Virginia Tech is now 13-5 and 2-3 vs. the conference.
SMU will look ahead in its schedule and host No. 16 Virginia (15-2, 4-1 ACC) on Saturday. Tip-off is set for Noon ET and will air live on ESPN2.
