While the 2025 Virginia high school football season is down to its last few weeks, the top teams are still competing for state championships. Before the final games this year, here’s how Massey ranked the state’s best squads.

The Massey Ratings system, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

1. The St. James Academy Strivers

In the Strivers’ first season, they have scored 50 or more points four times and have shut down two opponents. While they lost to St. Frances Academy in their finale, this inaugural Virginia high school football campaign showed promise for the upstart St. James Academy.

2. Maury Commodores

The Commodores dominated King’s Fork, 49-6, in their Virginia high school football Class 5 regional finals. From a 7-6 halftime lead, Maury scored 42 unanswered points to keep their season alive. The Commodores will advance to the state semifinals, wherein they will face Stone Bridge on December 6.

3. Varina Blue Devils

The Blue Devils are still in contention after defeating Huguenot 21-12. Kaleb Wyche had a rushing score and a passing touchdown to Darren Williams. Varina will play against Jefferson Forest in the Virginia high school football Class 4 state semifinals on December 6.

4. Benedictine Cadets

The Cadets avenged their earlier loss to Trinity Episcopal by defeating the Titans in the Virginia high school football Division I championship. Scoring 20 points in the first half is enough for Benedictine to finish their season at 11-1, a significant improvement from their 9-3 mark in 2024.

5. Oscar Smith Tigers

The Tigers are on an 11-game winning streak after beating Thomas Dale 48-7. Oscar Smith did most of the damage in the second and third quarters, scoring 34 points. They will advance to the Virginia high school football Class 6 state semifinals, wherein they will face Madison on December 6.
