Top Texas high school football hires next head coach, a former Baylor star
One of the top programs in North Texas high school football has found its new leader.
TexasFootball.com’ Matt Stepp reported on Thursday morning that West Mesquite has hired Jeremy Williams, formerly the head coach at San Antonio’s Sam Houston, to lead the program. Williams, who was a multi-year starter while playing safety at Baylor from 2006-2009, is making the move upstate to take over what’s been one of Texas’ biggest turnarounds in the past two seasons.
He replaces Stephen Jackson, who in two years led the Wranglers to 22-3 record, back-to-back district titles, and a school-record 11 wins each year before being hired by Lancaster High in earlier this month. Prior to West Mesquite, Coach Jackson was the head coach at Dallas Seagoville High School. He also served as offensive coordinator at Duncanville, Red Oak, and Wilmer Hutchins.
Williams, meanwhile, led the Hurricanes to a 23-20 record and three playoff appearances across four seasons at the helm. In 2025, Sam Houston was 6-5 overall and actually won the District 12-5A-II title with a while winning all six of its league games. They did so while playing up a classification despite having enrollment numbers in the Class 4A range.
A 2005 graduate from Dallas Carter and a former All-Big 12 selection as a player, Williams now returns closer to home with hopes of continuing the program’s winning ways over the past two years.
