Three-time state champion retuns to coaching Texas high school football
An esteemed Texas high school football head coach will come out of retirement and return to the sidelines.
A report from WFAA’s Mike Leslie states that former Aledo head coach Steve Wood will take over the Southwest Christian High School football program. Wood led the Bearcats to a 75-4 record in five seasons, three of which culminated in winning state championships (2014, 2016, 2018).
In 2019, Wood swapped roles with Tim Buchanan, taking over as Aledo’s athletic director. They retired together after the 2022 season and handed the program to former offensive coordinator Robbie Jones.
As he turns 68 next week, Wood will return to coaching Texas high school football. This time, he will be leading a private school, a role he will be doing for the first time. He will be taking over a team that finished 6-5 in Division II of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools. Wood will pay much attention in fixing the Southwest Christian defense that surrendered over 37 points per game.
