One of the best high school football programs in the state of Texas is getting a big boost at the quarterback position this offseason.

On Tuesday, standout 2028 quarterback Hayes Hackney told The Dallas Morning News he is making the move from Prospect Walnut Grove to Argyle ahead of his junior season. As a sophomore, Hackney threw for more than 3,100 yards and 37 touchdowns, completing 68 percent of his passes. He led Walnut Grove to a 12-1 record and district title, and was named a first-team all-district selection in 4-5A DII.

Interestingly enough, it was Argyle that ended the Wildcats playoff run end in the 5A-II Region I semifinals. In that game, Hackney threw for 304 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another, but it wasn’t enough as Walnut Grove fell 59-42.

It was a similar story the year prior, as Hackney — the District 4-5A DII MVP that season as a freshman — threw for 311 yards and accounted for two total touchdowns in a 52-35 defeat.

He’ll now be on the other side of the field should these two teams meet again in the playoffs. The 5-foot-10, 160-pounder holds early scholarship offers from UTSA and Stephen F. Austin. Now, Hackney will be counted on to replace departing three-year starter Maguire Gasperson, the program’s all-time leading passer with 7,744 career yards.

Last season, Gasperson led the Eagles to the state quarterfinals in Class 5A Division II, and has signed to play at UTSA.
