North Oldham (Ky.) upsets top-ranked St. Xavier behind Pierre Rondo, son of former Kentucky star
There were multiple big upsets on the hardwood in the Bluegrass on Tuesday evening, but the biggest came in Louisville as North Oldham went to St. Xavier and took down Kentucky’s top-ranked team 72-69.
A familiar name to Kentuckians helped the Mustangs pull off the upset. Point guard Pierre Rondo, the son of former UK star and longtime NBA guard Rajon Rondo, finished with 17 points, nine assists, four rebounds and three steals.
Rondo is still in the eighth grade and is currently a part of the 2030 recruiting cycle. He’s likely to be one of the top overall prospects in his class. With his father in the crowd, he pushed North Oldham to its biggest win of the season. Junior guard Eli Green led the Mustangs with 22 points, 18 of which came from behind the arc, while senior center Colin Daniels had 10.
St. X had a 37-32 lead at halftime, but Oldham really emerged with a 24-point third quarter that helped it vault ahead by five points heading into the final period. Senior forward Jeremiah Jackson had 19 points in the loss for the Tigers.
The season series is now tied up between the two programs. St. X won the first meeting of the season last month, beating the Mustangs 57-47 on Dec. 20.
