Luther 'Uncle Luke' Campbell steps down as head coach at Miami Edison (Fla.)
One of the most prominent names in Florida high school football coaching circles has called it quits.
Miami (Fla.) Edison is in the market for a new head coach after Luther Campbell, also known as Uncle Luke, stepped down on Monday, according to Fox Sports South Florida’ Andy Slater.
Campbell had been at the helm for the Red Raiders since 2018, turning a downtrodden program into a contender in recent years. Edison finished the 2025 season with a 6-5 record, falling in the regional semifinals of the Class 1A state playoffs to powerhouse Chaminade-Madonna.
A prominent University of Miami supporter and a native of the area, Campbell came to prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s as ‘Uncle Luke’ in the rap group 2 Live Crew. He first became associated publicly with football when Campbell was alleged to have been behind what was referred to as a “pay-for-play” system, which involved cash rewards for Hurricanes players scoring touchdowns or making big hits to knock opponents out of the game.
However, in 1994 he started the Liberty City Optimist Club at Charles Hadley Park, which later became one of the most successful Pop Warner programs ever. The Liberty City Warriors program won four Pop Warner national championships since 2005 served as the starting point for dozens of future NFL players. Campbell was later hired to be the linebackers coach at powerhouse Miami Central in 2009 and helped lead the team a state title in only his second season.

He later landed a job as the defensive coordinator at Miami Northwestern, then made stops at Norland and Jackson High before Edison hired him in 2018. According to the Miami Herald, Edison only had eight players when he took over the program. The Red Raiders won three games his first year, then went .500 in Year 2.
In the 2020 season shortened by Covid-19, Campbell led the Red Raiders to a 4-2 regular season record and all the way to 3A state regional finals before they fell 28-0 to Chaminade-Madonna.
Across eight seasons, he led Edison to a 45-42 record including an 8-5 campaign in 2021. But being stuck in the same region as private schools like Chaminade-Madonna was tough to overcome in the postseason.
The Lions ended Edison’s seasons in 2020, 2021, 2024 and 2025.
