Championship-winning Texas high school basketball coach has a unique skill set

Typically, Texas high school basketball coaches also serve in other roles. While a few could serve as the school’s athletic director, some could teach other subjects. In that case, Sam Richardson at Hitchcock High School might have a unique case due to his other professions.

As revealed in a video uploaded by the Houston Inside High School Sports account on X (formerly Twitter), Richardson is also the Hitchcock Independent School District’s plumber and locksmith. He said, “This (the current season) has been an awesome year for the girls. This is my first year coaching.”

What a way for Richardson to start his coaching career, guiding the Bulldogs to a 26-7 record. Despite facing challenges, Hitchcock persevered and emerged victorious in the Class 3A Division 1 state championship game against Bishop.

That victory over the Badgers had the Bulldogs closing their season on a 15-game winning streak. There were some close calls, like their three-point victory over Little River Academy in the state semifinals and their four-point win over Fairfield in the quarterfinals.

However, overcoming those challenges led to a historic achievement for Richardson and the Hitchcock girls’ basketball team. “These girls are the first girls in H.I.S.D. history to win state…and then no team in Galveston County in the girls’ division has ever won state,” Richardson added.
