It’s not everyday you get to see a former NFL’er at your high school football playoff game. For those at the Gainesville-Langston Hughes’ game on Friday night got to see Cam Newton in attendance for what was arguably the most-watched high school football game of the night out of Georgia.

The Red Elephants defeated the Panthers, 40-32, to move on to next week’s Class AAAAA state semifinal to face Rome.

Newton was recently inducted into the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame Class of 2025 back in October and played his high school ball in Northwest Georgia.

“Being named an inductee for the class of 2025 is something special, and it’s definitely a full circle moment for me,” Newton said back in late October.

When it comes to Newton’s storied playing career during his high school days, the former NFL Pro Bowler made an impact as being one of the best to come out of Westlake High School in Atlanta.

While playing at Westlake, Newton nabbed all-state honors twice and lifted the program to its second-ever region title 20 years ago. Newton after his high school playing days went on to play college football most notably at the University of Florida and Auburn, which the latter he ended up winning the Heisman Trophy and a national championship in the 2010 season.

After Auburn, Newton went on to be selected as the No. 1 overall pick of the 2011 Draft by the Carolina Panthers, where he played 11 NFL seasons and going on to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award in his first season.

Later in his professional football career, Newton would be named NFL’s Most Valuable Player and led the Panthers to a Super Bowl appearance in the 2015 season.
