California high school football coach of 29 years announces resignation

Valley Christian head football coach Mike Machado has been coaching the Defenders the last 29 years in California high school football. After nearly three decades at the helm, Machado has decided to step down as the school’s head coach.

The school announced in a press release earlier this week that Machado would be stepping down as the school’s lead man. Valley Christian just finished a 3-7 campaign this past 2025 season.

“It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as the head football coach at Valley Christian for the past three decades,” Machado said via the press release. “Our program is built on incredible student-athletes, families, and coaches. I am confident that the future of Warrior Football is bright, and I look forward to supporting the next coach as the program continues to grow.”

Over the course of Machado’s 29 years coaching at Valley Christian, the release stated that the head coach had won more than 250 California high school football games, which included multiple league and CCS (Central Coast Section) Championships.

“Coach Machado’s impact on students, athletes, and families will be felt for generations. His leadership, character, and commitment to developing young men of God have left a remarkable legacy. We are grateful he will continue to serve our community as Dean of Students at VCHS,” Valley Christian principal Dr. Jennifer Silva said.
