After over 70 applicants for the vacant football head coaching position, the Bishop Montgomery Knights (Calif.) have locked down who will lead the program moving forward.

According to a report by High School On SI, the Knights have tabbed former Murrieta Mesa (Calif.) head coach Oscar McBride as their new lead man. McBride turned around the Rams after the program went 0-9 in 2021 to winning a CIF title.

“Our search committee was deeply impressed not only by Coach McBride’s experience and football knowledge, but by his heart for mentorship and his desire to invest in the lives of our young men. From a talented pool of over 70 candidates, Coach McBride emerged as the leader who best embodies our values and the future we envision for Knight football,” Bishop Montgomery principal Dr. Michele Starkey said in the report.

McBride briefly played in the NFL from 1995-97, playing for the Arizona Cardinals and Kansas City Chiefs, respectively. There, the tight end caught 13 passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns in three years.

During his time at Murrieta Mesa, McBride compiled an overall record of 29-21, which included a 10-5 mark in 2024.

Bishop Montgomery, which finished 0-9 this past 2025 campaign, went through one of the more tumultuous high school football seasons for any program in the country.

During the 2025 campaign, Bishop Montgomery had fired longtime previous head coach Ed Hodgkiss after the Knights were forced to forfeit their Week 1 matchup against Mater Dei for not having enough players.

Hodgkiss was named Bishop Montgomery’s head coach back in 2010 and was in his 16th season as the Knights head coach, compiling a record of 84-69-1. He had led the Knights to league championships in 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018.
