Archbishop Spalding (Md.) HFC Kyle Schmitt leaving for Big Ten Conference job

According to a report by the Capital Gazette, one of the top Maryland high school football head coaches is leaving to take a coaching job in the Big Ten Conference.

Per the report, Archbishop Spalding (Md.) head coach Kyle Schmitt told the outlet that he’s leaving the Cavaliers to become the tight ends coach for University of Maryland. Schmitt is coming off a season where he led Archbishop Spalding to a 10-2 record and a state title.

Schmitt’s overall record as head football coach at Archbishop Spalding is 101-36-1, serving as the Cavaliers’ lead man from 2013-2025.

Before ever becoming the head football coach at Archbishop Spalding, Schmitt served multiple seasons as a graduate assistant at Maryland and also spent 2006 as the tight ends coach at St. Vincent College. Schmitt, now back at his alma mater, played in 48 games for the Terrapins from 2001-04, including 27 starts as an interior offensive lineman.

Archbishop Spalding, which won the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Class A state championship in 2025, finished as the state’s No. 3 ranked team, according to the final Maryland 2025 High School Football Massey Rankings.
