5-star EDGE Anthony Sweeney transferring to St. Frances Academy (Md.) for senior season
One of the nation’s top high school football programs is getting an elite addition on the defensive side of the ball for the 2026 season.
Anthony Sweeney, a five-star EDGE prospect, is transferring from Good Counsel (Md.) to St. Frances Academy for his senior season, according to Billy Tucker of The UC Report.
Sweeney is the No. 20 overall prospect and No. 3 EDGE in the 2027 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all major recruiting media companies. He’s also the top-ranked recruit in Maryland.
He’ll join a St. Frances squad that just won the first-ever Overtime Nationals championship game last season. The Panthers finished as the No. 2 team in the nation, according to the Rivals Composite Rankings.
Sweeney will fill the void left by Five-Star Plus+ EDGE Zion Elee, the No. 6 prospect in the 2026 cycle, who signed with Maryland. Last season’s St. Frances roster featured 26 ranked prospects. Sweeney will now be a headliner on the upcoming roster, alongside Texas A&M four-star cornerback commit Raylaun Henry, junior four-star EDGE Jermaine Smith Jr. and others.

According to MaxPreps, Sweeney had 34 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 11 games as a junior for Good Counsel. The vaunted pass-rusher has a public top 12 schools list that includes Tennessee, Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, Oregon, Miami, Maryland, Texas Tech, LSU, South Carolina, Ole Miss and Texas A&M.
“I would say it’s been a tight race so far, and I’m very thankful to be in this position,” Sweeney recently told Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong. “The schools that have stood out from the group are tied to elite coaching and the relationships I’ve been able to build with them. Texas A&M, Alabama, Tennessee, and South Carolina are a few of the programs I’ve been getting to know for quite some time now, so it’s just been a blessing.”
