3-star 2022 wideout Zion Steptoe backs off commitment to Utah
Three-star 2022 Frisco (Tex.) Memorial wide receiver Zion Steptoe backed off his commitment to Utah on Monday afternoon, almost four months after he initially pledged to the Utes.
Steptoe announced his decision on Twitter, saying, “Thank you to the entire coaching staff at Utah, especially Coach Bumphis, for the opportunity to be a Ute. Thank you to all the Utah family for embracing me. However, after many discussions with my family and others close to me, I have decided to decommit from the University of Utah. This was not an easy decision. I wish nothing but the best for the team.”

The 6-foot, 170-pound speedster, who clocked a 10.97 100-meter dash this spring, was one of the Utes’ best recruiting wins over the summer. He chose Utah over offers from Kentucky, Purdue and Vanderbilt, and he’s likely to gain even more interest as the high school season goes on. Through six games this season at Memorial, he’s hauled in 23 passes for 357 yards and four touchdowns. As a junior, he reeled in 37 balls for 790 yards and eight scores.
Zion Steptoe’s decommitment leaves Utah with just seven players pledged for 2022, and their class ranks No. 79 overall and 11th in the Pac-12.
