Report: TCU, Sonny Dykes agree to multi-year contract extension
TCU and head football coach Sonny Dykes have reportedly agreed on a new multi-year contract extension, according to On3’s Pete Nakos. Dykes is 36-17 in four seasons with the Horned Frogs, including making the College Football Playoff national championship game in 2022.
TCU athletic director Mike Buddie formally announced Dykes’ extension in a press release on Friday. No terms or additional number of years were revealed.
“I am appreciative and thankful to Mike Buddie, Chancellor Daniel Pullin, and our administration for their belief and support of our program,” Dykes said in the press release. “The opportunity to pursue a national championship, the College Football Playoff, and Big 12 championships exists right here in Fort Worth, and my family and I, as well as our entire staff, are excited to continue that pursuit as Horned Frogs.”
Since going 13-2 and making the 2022 national title game, the 56-year-old Dykes is 23-15 overall and 14-13 in Big 12 play, but has back-to-back nine-win seasons the past two years. Dykes is also 3-1 in bowl games at TCU.
“Competing for national and Big 12 championships requires the right leadership, and Sonny has proven he’s that person,” Buddie said in Friday’s release. “His track record on the field, his standing in the community, and the decisions he’s made to position this program to pursue those goals speak for themselves.”

The Horned Frogs started the 2025 season off strong with three straight wins, including victories over North Carolina and 2024 ACC champion SMU, to climb into the AP Top 25 rankings. But TCU struggled in Big 12 play, including back-to-back losses to Iowa State and No. 12 BYU to fall to 3-4 in conference games in mid-November. Dykes did manage to re-right the ship and close out 2025 on a three-game win streak, including an Alamo Bowl victory over No. 16 USC to finish 9-4 overall for the second straight year.
“I believe the Big 12 is the most competitive conference in football,” Dykes said following the Alamo Bowl victory. “I really do believe that. From top to bottom, anybody can win any given Saturday, and it makes it a very difficult conference to win.
“Maybe not as many teams at the top as there is in the SEC or maybe the Big Ten, but the bottom teams in the Big 12 are crazy competitive. So, anyway, it’s a hell of a league, and you know, hard to win it.”
Buddie initially revealed he was in talks with Dykes to extend his contract in February.
“Sonny was laser-focused in the end-of-year review of the program and made a number of difficult decisions with the goal of bringing TCU back to the College Football Playoff,” Buddie wrote in his February newsletter. “We are currently in talks to extend Coach Dykes’ contract, and I will have more to share on that very soon.”
