Providence expected to part ways with Kim English at end of season
Providence will not return head coach Kim English next season, per Jeff Goodman. English has been Providence’s head coach for three seasons.
Providence is 14-16 overall and 7-12 in conference play this season. The Friars have one game remaining in their regular season. In February, English addressed the criticism surrounding the program’s success during his tenure.
“I’m deaf to outside noise,” English said. “I don’t hear anything that’s going on — the BS outside or whatever people say or whatever. But I know they do. They do. … The focus has been on keeping them together through all that crap. And they haven’t let go of the rope. Because, truthfully, whatever anyone says on the outside doesn’t matter.
“If someone says you’re going to win a national championship, it doesn’t matter. If someone says you’re awful, it doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is when the ball is thrown up. Keeping that message, and our guys — they haven’t let go of the rope.”
In his three seasons at the helm of Providence, English has led Providence to a 42-49 overall record and a 20-35 mark against Big East opponents. The program never reached the NCAA Tournament under English.
The Friars competed in the NIT in English’s debut campaign as head coach. They lost in the first round.

Prior to his time at Providence, Kim English was George Mason’s head coach for two seasons. He led the program to a 34-29 overall record. Additionally, English has served as an assistant coach at Tulsa, Colorado and Tennessee.
He played college basketball at Missouri, where he earned all-conference honors. The Detroit Pistons selected English with the No. 44 overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft. English never was able to carve out a role in the NBA and played overseas before beginning to coach.
As of this report, Kim English’s buyout is unclear. However, Providence is expected to owe English a significant sum of money because it signed the 37-year-old head coach to a six-year contract extension in 2024.
Prior to English’s tenure, Providence had made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances under head coach Ed Cooley. In fact, the Friars had earned an NCAA Tournament bid in seven of the 10 seasons prior to English taking the reins of the program.
