Nebraska DB Malcolm Hartzog plans to enter NCAA Transfer Portal
Nebraska senior DB Malcolm Hartzog plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, per On3’s Pete Nakos. Hartzog played in just two games this season before suffering a season-ending injury. He utilized his redshirt, giving him one more season of eligibility.
Hartzog spent four seasons at Nebraska, recording 108 tackles, 13 pass deflections, eight interceptions, and 4.5 TFL across 38 career games. He was named a 2024 All-Big Ten Honorable-Mention and the 2022-23 Nebraska Male Freshman Athlete of the Year.
The Silver Creek, MS native was expected to be the anchor of Nebraska‘s defense this season, making his absence across the final 10 games disastrous for Matt Rhule‘s team. Prior to suffering the injury, Hartzog cemented Nebraska‘s season-opening 20-17 win over Cincinnati with a game-winning interception in the end zone.
Hartzog’s best collegiate season came in 2024, when he recorded 45 tackles, four pass deflections, and four interceptions. He was tied for the second-most interceptions in the Big Ten Conference, just behind Minnesota‘s Koi Perich (five).
Hartzog’s absence was detrimental for Nebraska defense
He supposedly would have been likely to return for the postseason, but with Nebraska sitting at 7-5 heading into the SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl against No. 15 Utah, Hartzog decided to completely shut things down. The Cornhuskers entered the season with College Football Playoff expectations, but an embarrassing 24-6 loss to Minnesota on Oct. 17 all but wiped those hopes away.

“I think people have a right to be upset with the way (the season) ended,” Rhule said on Nov. 28. “For me, all I can say is that I have some of the best recruits here today. I’m going to continue to work as hard as I can and as long as I can, and I’m going to surround myself with some really positive people. Not toxic people. I’m just going to continue to try and move the program forward.”
Prior to enrolling at Nebraska, Coleman was ranked as a three-star prospect and the No. 1,062 overall player in the 2022 class, according to the On3 Consensus. He was the No. 104-ranked CB in his class and the No. 27 overall player from the state of Mississippi, hailing from Jefferson Davis County.
