Elliot Cadeau update: Michigan star reveals allergic reaction before Final Four was caused by cashew nut
Michigan point guard Elliot Cadeau finally revealed the cause of the allergic reaction that sent him to a local Ann Arbor hospital on Wednesday. After joining his Wolverines teammates in Indianapolis on Thursday, Cadeau told reporters it was a cashew nut that sparked his allergic reaction, according to The Wolverine’s Chris Balas, just as the team was preparing to leave for the 2026 Final Four.
Cadeau also said he’s “feeling good,” according to Balas, and the trip to the Ann Arbor hospital was more for precautionary testing to avoid further issues. Apparently, this wasn’t Cadeau’s first issue with cashews.
Detroit radio station WWJ 950 posted a video on X/Twitter that showed what was later revealed to be Cadeau being wheeled out of Michigan’s player development center on a gurney and loaded into a Huron Valley ambulance. Cadeau didn’t travel with the rest of Michigan’s team to Indianapolis.
“Before the team departed the Player Development Center today, Elliot alerted the medical staff that he may have had an allergic reaction to something that he ate,” Michigan said in a statement Thursday morning. “The doctors evaluated Elliot and he is fine. Out of an abundance of caution, he is receiving medical supervision and will be traveling to Indianapolis later today.”
Cadeau is averaging 10.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game this season, while shooting 41.6% from the field and 37.7% from beyond the arc. For his efforts, he was named an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention selection last month.

With the allergic reaction behind him, Cadeau is once again expected to be a pivotal factor as Michigan prepares to take on fellow No. 1-seeded Arizona in Saturday night’s Final Four game inside Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Cadeau scored 17 points in the Wolverines’ 90-77 win over Alabama in the Sweet Sixteen last Friday. He followed up that with eight points and 10 assists against Tennessee in the Elite Eight on Sunday night.
Since 1957, Arizona and Michigan have met 10 times. The Wildcats boast an 8-2 all-time record against the Wolverines. The two storied programs last clashed in September 2021, when the Wildcats ran away with a comfortable 80-62 victory. With Duke’s Elite Eight loss to UConn on Sunday, Arizona is the next highest overall seed remaining, followed only by third-overall seed Michigan.
The Wildcats and Wolverines will face off at 7:49 p.m. ET Saturday, with the game televised on TBS, TruTV and HBO Max.
