Biff Poggi makes case for Michigan job: 'I know what the hell I’m doing'
Michigan associate head coach Biff Poggi has reportedly interviewed for the Wolverines’ opening at head coach. He certainly isn’t shying away from his interest in the position.
“I know what the hell I’m doing,” Poggi said, per On3’s Clayton Sayfie. Sayfie also reported that Poggi has interviewed for the job “multiple times.”
Poggi joined Michigan’s staff as an associate head coach last offseason after being fired by Charlotte. In his two seasons as Charlotte’s head coach, Poggi led the 49ers to a 6-16 overall record and a 4-10 mark in conference play.
Michigan is actively searching for a new head coach after firing Sherrone Moore earlier this month. The school fired Moore after his “inappropriate relationship with a staff member” surfaced when the woman involved informed Michigan of the relationship.
Moore was arrested after he allegedly forced entry into the staffer’s home and threatened to take his own life after she’d ended their relationship earlier in the week. Moore was charged with felony third-degree home invasion and two misdemeanors: Stalking in a domestic relationship and breaking and entering.
It’s only the latest scandal for the Wolverines, who were also punished by the NCAA for illegally stealing opponents’ signals. Biff Poggi didn’t mince words when discussing the school’s recent issues.
“Everything that happens in this building has to be reevaluated,” Poggi said, via Austin Meek. Poggi also called Michigan under Moore a “malfunctioning organization.”

Poggi served as Michigan’s interim head coach for two games during the 2025 campaign: a 63-3 win over Central Michigan and a 30-27 road victory at Nebraska. He’ll be the team’s acting head coach in their showdown against Texas in the Cheez-It Bowl. Poggi said preparing for the game amid the chaos of Moore’s firing has been challenging.
“Unique and complex,” Poggi said of the team’s preparation. “Multiple levels of complexity that our young people are dealing with, our university is dealing with, our athletic director, Warde Manuel, is dealing with. And our team, our kids. I don’t know that you can prepare for something like this. I’ll just say, complicated.
“… It has been a tumultuous time. A lot of anger. First, disbelief, and then anger, and really what we’re in right now is the phase of the kids, quite frankly, feel quite betrayed. We’re trying to work through that.”
Michigan and Texas will square off at 3 p.m. ET on New Year’s Eve. The game will air live on ABC. The game’s outcome could affect the likelihood of Poggi becoming Michigan’s next head coach.
