Biff Poggi addresses if he expects Bryce Underwood back at Michigan in 2026
With the ongoing situation in Ann Arbor, the biggest question roster-wise going into the offseason will be the future, as part of the program or not, of Michigan QB Bryce Underwood. That said, Biff Poggi, the interim head coach currently, isn’t that far ahead when it comes to the Wolverines’ quarterback.
Poggi addressed a question about Underwood’s future during his press conference on Monday. He said, while it’s not up for him to answer at this time, that they hope to have him back for next season in the maize & blue.
“Bryce? Well, I certainly hope so. I would hope so, yeah,” said Poggi. “I mean, you want to ask that question, you should probably ask him or his dad or mom.”
However, beyond that, Michigan isn’t even to that point yet with Underwood. That’s as Poggi says that all of their attention, including that of their true freshman quarterback, is on their matchup with Texas in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
“I mean, we’re focused on Texas right now. He’s focused on Texas. Have you seen any film on Texas? No? Have you seen any? They’ve got a bunch of monsters on their football team, right. So, that’s what we’re focused on,” said Poggi. “That’s what Bryce is focused on. We’re not focused on who’s going to go where next year.”

“Hell, I might not even be here next year. You never know, right,” Poggi added as a reminder. “So, I’m not thinking about that.”
Underwood, though, remains the biggest storyline in all of this now following the sudden firing, and subsequent arrest, of Sherrone Moore. He, the former top overall recruit in the country as a Five-Star+ prospect last cycle per Rivals’ Industry Ranking, flipped to Mischigan, and went on to be the Wolverines’ starter this fall as he posted 61.1% completion for 2,229 passing yards, averaging 185.8 per game, along with nine touchdowns and six interceptions, while rushing for 323 yards and five more scores. But, with the coaching change, and no word yet on what hire may be made for their next head coach, Underwood could elect to enter his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal, where he’d almost certainly be one of the top targets available from around the FBS.
Again, only so much thought has likely got into that yet, especially with no hire made to this point, with a game still left for the Wolverines. Still, this looms over Michigan from a transfer perspective, as they could go into next season not just with a new coach but also with a new quarterback pending a possible decision made by Underwood.
