Daylyn Upshaw injury update: Mario Cristobal offers grim news on Miami WR
Miami wide receiver Daylyn Upshaw missed the Hurricanes’ 10-3 win over Texas A&M last weekend the with injury. Now advancing to the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff to play Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl, Upshaw’s status for the matchup has since been updated.
Head coach Mario Cristobal gave a grim outlook for the Miami wide receiver’s availability for the rest of the playoff. He also revealed what’s causing him to remain sidelined for the foreseeable future.
“Daylyn [Upshaw] sustained a foot injury in practice last week,” Cristobal said. “Which was one of those things where you just can’t predict. Foot injuries are tricky. He sustained one, so he’ll be out for a significant amount of time.”
While Cristobal said that Upshaw is expected to miss a large amount of time, it’s unclear what his officially injury timeline is. Or what the specific injury to his foot is, for that matter.
Upshaw, a true freshman, has seven catches for 105 yards this season and has logged stats in five games. He caught passes in each of the last four games of the regular season, provided key snaps to the Hurricanes in must-win situations. Upshaw is a former three-star recruit, per the Rivals Industry Rankings, which is a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services.

Cristobal also updated the statuses of four more Hurricanes ahead of the Cotton Bowl. All signs point toward a largely healthy roster, aside from a couple of nagging injuries (not including Upshaw).
“Jakobe [Thomas] is fine. [Zechariah Poyser], he’s fine,” Cristobal said. “I think Mo [Toure] will be fine. Damari Brown, it’s a little bit longer, but we’re hopeful that we’re going to get a favorable response here in a bit. But I cannot say he’s better off than being questionable.”
Toure was banged up late during the Texas A&M game. Brown missed the first-round playoff game with injury, and his status appears up in the air heading into the Cotton Bowl. Brown was one of three players who missed the win over Texas A&M completely, including Upshaw and LB Malik Bryant.
Miami will have to move forward with who’s available for them during the Cotton Bowl against Ohio State. Kickoff for that matchup is set for Dec. 31 at 7:30 p.m. ET live on ESPN. The New Year’s Eve matchup will serve as the only CFP game on the docket before the triple-header on Jan. 1.
