Kentucky men's basketball announces 'Unity Series' matchup vs Florida A&M, plan to honor Reggie Warford

In 2021, Kentucky basketball started what they call the Unity Series. It’s a five-year series of schools against SWAC schools. Those schools are traditional HBCU–historically black colleges and universities–schools. The goal of this was to provide HBCUs a spotlight in college basketball.

Now, the Wildcats have announced the Unity Series matchup for the 2022-23 season. It will come against Florida A&M. The Rattlers will travel to Rupp Arena on December 21, 2022.

The game will also honor Kentucky legend Reggie Warford, the first black basketball player to graduate from Kentucky. Warford died in May. He was 67 years old.

Reggie Warford played at Kentucky from 1973-76. During that time, he played in 50 games for the Wildcats. He scored 206 points and won the 1976 NIT. He was also a member of the Wildcat’s 1975 NCAA Tournament runner-up squad.

Officially, Reggie Warford is the second black men’s basketball player at Kentucky. However, he was the first to play in all four seasons and earn his degree from the university. He was coached by Joe B. Hall.

In the first Unity Series matchup, Kentucky played Southern at Rupp Arena. The Wildcats won that game 76-64.
