Iowa transfer WR Keagan Johnson commits to Kansas State

Iowa transfer wide receiver Keagan Johnson has committed to Kansas State, he announced on Sunday afternoon. Johnson spent just two seasons with the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Johnson was a four-star recruit coming out of high school in the On3 consensus rankings. Johnson was rated as the No. 19 athlete in the class and the No. 3 player in the state of Nebraska. In two seasons at Iowa, Johnson caught 20 passes for 363 yards and two touchdowns. Both touchdowns came during Johnson’s freshman season in 2021.

By transferring to Kansas State, Johnson will likely become one of the top receiving targets for the Wildcats in 2023. The Wildcats were led in receiving by senior Malik Knowles with 719 yards and two touchdowns.

Wildcats building on success with Johnson

Johnson now joins a Kansas State program that is coming off of its best season under fourth-year head coach Chris Klieman. The Wildcats went 9-3 in the regular season and then won the Big 12 Championship game to get to 10 wins. It was the first Big 12 title for the Wildcats since the 2012 season under legendary coach Bill Snyder.

“I’ll let that sink in at some point. I’m fortunate to be here,” Klieman said after the game. “Gene Taylor took a chance on an FCS coach when not a lot of people would. But he believed in me and us. And coming here I look at these guys that believed in us as a coaching staff when there was a coaching change and stuck with us. And the last couple of years starting in January of 2021, these guys will tell you, our locker room became so close and so tight. And I’m telling you that this is about the power of belief and the power of player ownership. When you have those two things, I don’t think anything will stop you.”

Kansas State is set to face Alabama in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Eve. Kick is stated for 11 a.m. CT.
