Kirby Smart reveals Nyier Daniels is no longer with Georgia program after arrest
Georgia OT Nyier Daniels was arrested on a double-digit number of charges in Commerce, Georgia on Sunday. Now, on Monday, Kirby Smart has confirmed that the redshirt freshman will no longer be with the Bulldogs.
Smart addressed the incident involving Daniels to end the opening statement at his press conference on Monday. He went ahead and answered the questions he knew would be coming on the matter, as he said that they had not been in contact with him and that he would not be with the program moving forward, which had been reported by yesterday evening following the news of what had happened.
“With that, I’ll also – I know you guys want to ask about Nyier,” said Smart. “Have not had a chance to talk to him or his family. But, obviously, he’ll no longer be with us, so.”
Asked later in the press conference about he and the program’s handling of off-field, legal matters, specifically with several in their recent history involving players behind the wheel of vehicles, Smart added that it’s never just a no-tolerance policy in how they go about it. They handle those based on whatever happens and the facts of the instances, like they had to do yesterday and today regarding this issue involving Daniels.
“I think (one strike and you’re out) would be your words, not my words,” Smart clarified. “I think my words would be each case is a case-by-case basis, and we’ll always evaluate things that way based on the total history of the student-athlete, what the actions were, and what they entailed.”

Daniels was arrested yesterday morning on seventeen separate charges, reportedly at thirteen misdemeanors and four felonies, after a car chase that also involved his mother, who also received several charges, as well as younger siblings in the vehicle with him, in Commerce. UGASports’ Anthony Dasher has further shared details on the matter, from the initial stop, to the chase, and to the arrests made thereafter, from Sunday.
“We are aware of the charges and are currently in the process of gathering additional information,” Steven Drummond, Georgia Deputy AC/Chief Marketing Officer, said yesterday in a response per Dasher. “This is a pending legal matter, and we will not have further comment at this time.”
Daniels was in his second season with UGA. He had made three appearances on their offensive line in e each of their games against mid-majors, with snaps against Marshall and Austin Peay in the first two weeks before playing against Charlotte on Saturday.
