Florida State QB Thomas Castellanos did not return to the loss at Stanford two weekends ago after a hit that was called for targeting on that Saturday night. His status now remains in some question coming off the bye for the Seminoles’ next game.

Norvell shared the latest on Castellanos during his press conference on Monday. He said that, had there been a game last weekend, their quarterback likely wouldn’t have been available to go. But, with the week off, Castellanos has made enough progress to where we’ll know more as the week goes on, specifically once the ACC Availability Report comes out on Thursday.

“No, I mean, we’ll see how everything, you know, plays out this week. And, you know, just big-picture approach with all the guys that have dealt with injuries? I mean, you know, we’ll have the availability report here towards the end of the week,” said Norvell. “But, you know, coming off the bye, that did – Tommy probably would not have been able to play if we had to play last week.

“But, you know, saw some real progress towards the end of the week off. And, we’re trying to be real careful with him, you know, just as we went about it. But, it was good to see the guys practice. You know, he was able to get some work towards the end of the week.”

With less than three minutes left in the game, Castellenos ran for 35 yards trying to get a big first down for FSU from around midfield all the way down to the 11-yard line. At the end of his slide, though, S Mitch Leigber put his helmet downward with a hit that led to the ‘Nole’s quarterback to exit, with QB Kevin Sperry finishing what ended up as a 20-13 loss to the Cardinal.

Before exiting, Castellanos was 14-28 (50%) for 242 yards, while rushing for 33 yards in the end and a touchdown. It accounted for his worst completion rate of the season during what was a fourth-straight loss, all of which have now come in conference play, for the Seminoles.

The bye hopefully made some difference in where Castellanos stands going into this weekend’s matchup against Wake Forest. Still, Florida State seemingly won’t know more until they see how he progresses over the course of the next few days.

“Excited about what’s ahead for this week,” said Norvell. “But, we’ll have to take it day by day as this week unfolds.”
