Dabo Swinney sheds light on 'lying,' 'extortion' in NCAA transfer portal
On Jan. 6, former California linebacker Luke Ferrelli committed to Clemson via the NCAA Transfer Portal. Just 16 days later, Ferrelli flipped his commitment to Ole Miss.
On Friday, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney publicly addressed Ferrelli’s decision for the first time. The two-time national champion didn’t mince words, accusing Ole Miss of tampering and providing a detailed timeline of Clemson’s communication with Ferrelli.
Swinney emphasized that the alleged tampering wasn’t a one-off issue, but a result of a broken system. Specifically, Swinney said players and agents are extorting schools for more money, while some programs are causing athletes to make rash decisions by lying about financial opportunities.
“Quite frankly, what we’re dealing with right now is flat out extortion, in some cases,” Swinney said. “The tampering and some of the extortion that’s happening right now is because of the intensity of the decisions that are having to be made in such a short period of time, right in the middle of when people are trying to play bowl games, playoff games, etcetera.
“Adding to the pressure of all of this, there is absolutely zero transparency from a financial standpoint. People are lying. People just lie. And, because of that, people make rash decisions because there’s no transparency. There is no other sport or league that operates this way, and this present system is crazy.”
Ferrelli spent the past two seasons at California, but redshirted his true freshman season. He had a breakout campaign was named the 2025 ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year.

In turn, Ferrelli was a coveted target in the transfer portal. Swinney claimed Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding continued to communicate with Ferrelli after he’d signed with Clemson. Specifically, Swinney alleged that Golding texted Ferrelli, “I know you’re signed, but what is your buyout?
Additionally, Dabo Swinney said Ole Miss sent Ferrelli a photo of an apparent $1 million, one-year contract offer. Luke Ferrelli allegedly informed Clemson he entered to stay with the program.
Swinney said Ole Miss raised its offer to $2 million over two years and Ferrelli ultimately committed to Ole Miss. Swinney and Clemson reported Ole Miss for its alleged tampering to the NCAA.
“I am not going to let someone flat out tamper with my program,” Swinney said. “If you tamper with my players, I’m going to turn you in. There’s a lot more I can say, but I’m going to let the NCAA do its job.”
